Darren mentioned to me a while back about forming a LLC (with more friends interested) and buying a beach house somewhere on the Oregon coast between Corvallis and Portland. I checked a map, and someplace form Tillamook to Newport seems like a good stretch, eh?
So I've spend the afternoon looking at property on the internet in Tillamook and Lincoln counties. There is a lot there, but hard to really get a feel from the pics. Might be good to find a quality local agent to pound pavement for us for a while.
With real estate markets correcting, I think it's time to be a buyer over the next calendar year or two -- might be time to start getting commits from people now.
Also, what about buying land? Besides being able to camp/fish/film porn on it while we wait/save... we can build what we want. (psst: and there is some kick-ass pre-fabulous homes out recently that are just going to get more affordable. This approx $340/sq-ft beauty, including fees just got LEED-platinum certified in August -- first home in the nation to do so. I joined their mailing list and asked about how it might fare in the Oregon coast weather).

Darren had this on his del.icio.us account. That is hilarious. You would think people would be concerned when politicians are effin' with an 800 year old too!

Pretty interesting blog about a girl who wore the same dress for one year. Some sort of comment on commercialism. She does it, and it's cute. Man, I wear the same shit all the time, and that makes me white trash... which is decidedly not cute. Ah well. I guess it's not the clothes you wear, but the fact that you are a cute girl that makes you cute. :)

Ug. Erin and I just went through the most frustrating experience with a house that we were in the process of buying. So we went by this house that was listed and owned by an agent here at Bryant Realty in Corvallis. His name is Alec Carpenter.
We offered full price on it the day it was listed. He countered the next day with some very minor points that he was nervous about. For example, we offered an extra 4K to be applied to closing costs. He wanted to be sure that if the house appraised above the asking price and below the offer price that we would pay the difference for financing reasons.
Anyway, he countered with these small changes and we responded through our agent that we would be accepting the counter as-is. I was out of town by the time the new offer came in, and we were fighting some logistics up in Seattle in getting the offer printed out to sign. And by noon the next day he called and told us that someone had offered more, and that we were free to provide a last, best offer to be considered.
I have many assumptions about what happened during the 18 hours between when he submitted a counter and when he rescinded it. But what I know happened is this: He made an offer to us to purchase his house, and then continued negotiating with other people. I don't know if that is illegal, but I sure find it morally reprehensible.
He followed that performance up by asking us to be a backup offer. I understand that this is all just business, but I can't help but be incredibly disappointed with how the situation evolved. I can't imagine that it is OK to have an outstanding offer and continue to negotiate. To me, that is the same thing as offering on two different houses when I can only afford one.
Apparently, this guy's soul is for sale for a couple more thousand if anyone is interested.
